Fish Friday There’s a new state record for largest white trevally (aka thicklipped jack) caught in North Carolina! On May 8, 2025, Thomas Woo of Wilmington caught the record holding 37.8-inch long, 19-pound and 3.2-ounce fish offshore from Wrightsville Beach. The white trevally is greenish- blue above, silvery white from below, with a yellow stripe along its side. On May 22, 1939, work began on the first Jennette’s Ocean Pier in Nags Head. The pier opened for business that summer with a snack bar, bait stand, guest rooms, and restrooms for the public. Over the years, Jennette’s Pier suffered damage from sea worms, storms, and even a wayward shipwreck and was rebuilt several times. In 2003, damage from Hurricane Isabel caused its final demise. A new 1,000-foot state-of-the-art green pier with educational exhibits, wind turbines and concrete pilings opened in 2011 to replace the old pier. Happy 40th Anniversary, NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort! On May 18, 1985, the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort opened to the public in its new building on Front Street. Though the building is celebrating its 40th anniversary on May 18, 2025, the museum itself can trace its roots to the collection of natural history specimens on display in the US Fisheries Laboratory on Pivers Island starting around 1904. Fish Friday Today we are celebrating the red hind fish, also known as the strawberry or lucky grouper. These fish feature colors ranging from tan to bright red and are covered in uniform red spots. The red hind can live up to 17 years and usually grow to be about 23 inches long and weigh around 10 pounds. The North Carolina record holding red hind was caught off Beaufort, North Carolina, in 2023 by Christopher Rocci. The fish weighed 10 pounds 2.4 ounces and measured 25.5 inches long.
