Fish Friday On April 21, 2023, Jermiah Elliott of Greenville caught a 26 pound, 11.4 ounce, bigscale pomfret fish off the coast of Morehead City, becoming the first to hold the NC State record. The carnivorous bigscale pomfret has a dark silvery grey body and fins and enjoys a diet of primarily bony fish, octopus, squid, and cuttle fish. The fish can reach a length of up to 3-4 feet long and is found primarily in the temperate to tropical Atlantic, ranging from Nova Scotia to Brazil. On June 9, 1864, after successfully running the blockade four times, SS “Pevensey” met its end. The Confederate blockade runner was forced to run aground at Pine Knoll Shores by the Union supply ship “New Bern.” To prevent Union capture of the supplies on board, the crew of SS “Pevensey” exploded the ship’s boilers and then escaped to shore, where they were captured and taken to Fort Macon. Fish Friday The white perch fish is native to the Atlantic coast, preferring to live in low salinity estuaries and inland coastal rivers and lakes. At maturity, the white perch commonly measures 7-10 inches long and weighs ½-1 pound. The largest white perch caught in North Carolina weighed 2lbs. and 0.8 oz. The record holding fish was caught by Donald White in 2024 in Kitty Hawk Bay. Image: Record holding white perch. (Image courtesy NCDEQ). #fishfriday #fishfridays #biggame ... See MoreSee Less
