The first permanent English settlement on the Outer Banks was on Colington Island in Dare County. Colington Island, originally known as Colleton Island, was also the first land grant under the 1663 Carolina Charter that empowered the Lords Proprietors to grant land in what is now North and South Carolina. The first grant, dated September 8, 1663, was to Sir John Colleton, one of the eight Proprietors. The area was, “the island heretofore called Carlyle now Colleton Island…contayneing in lenkth 5 or 6 myles, in bredth about 2 or 3 myles.” Colington Island is located in Dare County bordered to the south by Kitty Hawk Bay and to the north by the Albermarle and Roanoke Sounds. Fish Friday Rainbow runner, aka Hawaiian salmon, is one of six species in the family Carangidae (Jacks). It is a pelagic fish with a spindle shaped body tapered on both ends, small mouth, and deeply forked tail. Since this species resembles “Salmonidae” of north temperate waters, it is referred to as “salmon” in Jamaica and “Hawaiian salmon” in Hawaii. The rainbow runner can grow up to 42 inches long and around 22 pounds. The largest rainbow runner caught in North Carolina weighed 23 pounds and 12 ounces.
