In the May 5, 1899, issue of “Science” magazine, Assistant Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries Hugh McCormick Smith announced that the U.S. Fish Commission would maintain a marine biological laboratory at Beaufort, NC. Great news from the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort! Beginning in June, our museum will join the other North Carolina Regional History Museums in adopting standardized operating hours statewide.For Beaufort visitors, the biggest change means more time to explore! We’ll now be open an extra hour each day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort
On May 3, 2008, the ship USS “North Carolina,” a Virginia-class attack submarine, held its commissioning ceremony at the Port of Wilmington in North Carolina. It was reported that more than 6,500 guests, including submarine veterans and battleship “North Carolina” alumni attended the ceremony welcoming the submarine as the 4th vessel named after the "Tar Heel State."
